The City of Tshwane has suspended the Bronkhorstspruit Water Treatment Works Plant manager, pending further investigation into the water crisis that has affected communities in the area.
The suspension follows a preliminary investigation into the interruption of chlorine supplies and the failure to warn residents about the associated risks in time.
Tshwane Mayor Dr Nasiphi Moya says the city has also ordered an independent investigation to establish accountability, while efforts continue to restore safe drinking water to affected communities.
“So now that the plant manager is suspended, we are continuing with the investigation because you can just imagine that it’s a whole value chain and something in the communication broke. We need to establish exactly where did it break and beyond holding the officials and people accountable, but to say which systems do we fix going forward.”
“I can also assure that we are subjecting ourselves to the different investigations and the criminal charges that have been laid against the city. We will fully cooperate and make sure that our participation also will be correct going forward, not only for Bronkhorstspruit, but for the entire city,” adds Moya.
