Masandawana were aiming to bounce back from their CAF Champions League exit and continue their strong domestic start, while the troubled Marumo chased their win in all competitions this campaign.
Sundowns were pinned back minutes after the start when former Kaizer Chiefs defender Siphosakhe Ntiya-Ntiya embarked on a forward run from the left and fire just wide following a cutback.
The Brazilians were unfazed amidst the visitors bright spell and broke the deadlock in the opening-quarter of the first half after Siyanda Ndlovu went on an overlapping run and rifled into the top corner from the narrowest of angles.
Bahlabane Ba Ntwa looked for a response on the half-hour mark as Msindisi Ndlovu combined with Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo to get inside the box for a shot, but goalkeeper Ricardo Goss smothered.
Sundowns were still on the back-foot with the minutes remaining in the first half and needed another stop from Goss to repel a probing shot from close-range by Ntiya-Ntiya.
Masandawana decided to ring the changes at the start of the second half and hauled in Aubrey Modiba for Fawaaz Basadien as well as Marcelo Allende in place of Thabo Cele.
The visitors showed a lot of intent following the resumption and were close to levelling when Saketso Moremi raced onto a through pass from Ndlondlo to go level with Goss and released shot, but the goalkeeper parried.
Sundowns responded to the threat a minute later as Ndlovu closed-in to a brace following a header at the back-post from a cross on the left by Modiba, but the effort lacked the power to beat Kagiso Mlambo.
Masandawana continued to go on the attack within the final stages and were close again to doubling the lead when Nuno Santos linked up with Rayners for a shot, but it strayed wide.
With the final whistle looming, the Brazilians showed a change and withdrew Antonio Van Wyk to give a run to the returning Monnapule Saleng as the African champions secured victory and a quarter-final spot.
