Aden McCarthy is slowly raising his hand for a Bafana Bafana call-up and this is good news for Pitso Mosimane, who will have more left-sided centre back options with Mbekezeli Mbokazi recently back from injury.

Bafana Bafana’s future looks bright in defence with some of the country’s most talented generation of centre backs available for selection.

Aden McCarthy has etched his name into South African football folklore by scoring his first UEFA Champions League goal for Sabah FK against German Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund — joining an elite list of countrymen to have found the back of the net in Europe’s premier club competition, alongside the likes of Benni McCarthy, Quinton Fortune, Bennett Mnguni and Steven Pienaar.

In a short space of time, McCarthy has gained valuable experience from playing against high level opposition in the Champions League and is not likely to fazed by the challenge if called up for the back-to-back qualifiers against Kenya.

Mamelodi Sundowns’ Khulumani Ndamane is another option at left-sided centre-back and is waiting for his opportunity to become a regular starter for the national team — meaning McCarthy will not have it all his own way if he does receive the call.

Left-sided centre-backs are considered rare, but there are quite a few of them coming up in recent times and this will benefit the national team — giving Mosimane an embarrassment of riches as he looks to build a defensive foundation capable of carrying Bafana into the next era of African football.
