Carload of Allegedly Stolen Booze Lead Mi7 to Four

Four suspected shoplifters were apprehended by Mi7 teams in Hayfields on Friday after allegedly stealing alcohol from a store in Athlone, with police later establishing that the group was wanted in connection with several other cases.

The incident began when the Mi7 Control Room received a report from an Armed Response client in Athlone that a group had allegedly stolen an undisclosed quantity of alcohol before fleeing in two vehicles.

Details of the vehicles were circulated and, shortly afterwards, the Mi7 Surveillance Net flagged them in the Hayfields area. The Mi7 Surveillance Net uses strategically positioned cameras equipped with Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology to identify vehicles of interest moving through monitored areas. The alert gave Mi7 Control Room operators a lead on the suspects’ movements, and Reaction Officers and Strategic Threat Response Unit (STRU) teams were immediately deployed.

As the vehicles continued through the area, further alerts from the Surveillance Net allowed Control Room operators to track their movements and relay updates to teams on the ground. The vehicles eventually stopped at a shopping centre in Hayfields, where Mi7 teams moved in and apprehended all four suspects.

A search of the vehicles uncovered numerous bottles of expensive alcohol believed to be linked to the earlier theft.

The suspects were taken to the police station, where further checks established that they were allegedly wanted in connection with several other cases.

The suspects and recovered goods were handed over to police for further investigation.
