Parliament will this week again be grappling with matters related to setting up the impeachment committee that will consider matters related to the President’s conduct following the theft of foreign currency from his Phala Phala farm in 2020.

Chairperson of the Section 89 Committee, Makashule Gana, hoped to convene the next meeting before the house goes into recess at the end of the month.

Tuesday, Parliament’s Rules Committee is set to adopt rules that will guide the process, after a sub-committee last week finalised a proposal for consideration.

According to the proposed outline adopted by a rules sub-committee last week, the Section 89 inquiry would operate much like other Parliamentary inquiries have done to date.

At its next meeting, the impeachment committee is expected to discuss the appointment of a chief evidence leader and an assistant, who have to be legal professionals.

They will have to prepare witness statements from everyone who is expected to testify before the committee.

The President will also be permitted to appoint a legal representative of his choosing.

It’s been a week since Rise Mzansi’s Makashule Gana was elected at the committee’s first meeting to lead the process.

On Monday, he said the next meeting of the committee is expected to deal with its terms of reference.

” Everything will be done in public. So, you will be able to see the process that we are going to embark on when we appoint the evidence leaders. It will not be something that will be done behind closed doors.”

If the proposed rules are approved by the Rules Committee on Tuesday, it’s expected that the final document will be put before the National Assembly for adoption by the end of this week.
