Go to hell Ramaphosa, Says East Rand residents
The president addressed the nation on Sunday, saying that dealing with illegal immigration remains a function solely reserved for the state and its institutions.
Echoing the sentiments, International Relations Minister Ronald Lamola said that the government is working with other African countries to help fund deportations and facilitate the voluntary return of their citizens.
But in KwaThema on the East Rand, where hundreds of demonstrators are marching for the immediate deportation of undocumented foreign nationals, many residents said that they want swifter action.
Several told Eyewitness News that they don’t support the president’s proposed solutions and believe the government should move faster to remove people found to be in the country illegally
While Ramaphosa stressed that lawlessness will not be tolerated, many here said that they want immediate action rather than further consultation with other countries.
Police continue to monitor the demonstration, which has remained peaceful.
