The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) says President Cyril Ramaphosa’s approval of the Eskom Restructuring Task Team is not in the interest of the public.

Phase One report recommends establishing an independent Transmission System Operator (TSO) separate from Eskom. The presidency asserts the aim of the move is to foster competition, attract investment, and enhance energy security.

The NUM deputy president, Olehile Kgware, says the restructuring must not come at the cost of jobs.

“The NUM is not happy about the change that President Ramaphosa is coming up with because we hold the view that is not in the interest of the public. Yes, we’ve written to the president. He has not responded to our letter. We have forced them as the union to consult lawyers and make sure that we litigate the process. Workers are not the only affected party. It’s not about NUM and its members, it’s about the society in general because the price of electricity already now is unbearable for our public. So this is not for the people, it is for a few elite people who will benefit as private businesses in taking over Eskom.”
