A person of interest, and a known gang member, has been taken in for questioning, regarding the deadly shooting incident that claimed four lives including those of two police officers on Friday night at Reiger Park, east of Johannesburg.

This was announced by Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia during a media briefing on Monday.

Anti-Gang Unit Constable Thapelo Tlomatsane (29), and Constable Sphiwe Sibeko (28), and two civilians were killed.

Police have recovered firearms belonging to the two police officers, Cachalia says the funerals of the police officials will take place over the weekend.

“I can confirm that a person of interest has been taken for questioning and the two rifles belonging to the South African Police Services (SAPS) were recovered in one of the informal settlement. The person of interest is a known gang-member, a leader of the gangs in the area who faces six other charges and is currently out on bail.”
