Mazda has launched its third-generation CX-5 in South Africa, offering a longer wheelbase, expanded luggage capacity and an upgraded interior. Priced from R578 350, the new CX-5 continues to serve as one of Mazda’s key models in the local market.

Since its 2012 introduction, the CX-5 has become Mazda’s best-selling global nameplate and a key model in South Africa. Developed around the Japanese philosophy of Jinba-Itta, which focuses on harmony between horse and rider, the latest model has grown in several key dimensions while offering greater comfort and a driver-focused experience, according to the manufacturer.

The wheelbase is 115mm longer than its predecessor’s, creating additional cabin space and improving passenger comfort. Luggage capacity has increased by 61 litres, while a lower loading height and flat cargo floor make loading heavier items easier.

Despite its larger footprint, the new CX-5 has a 5% lower drag coefficient, helping to improve aerodynamic efficiency. The model also introduces a Navy Blue Mica exterior colour inspired by an evolution of Mazda’s 1970s corporate colour scheme.

At launch, the South African CX-5 is powered by Mazda’s 2.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, producing 132kW at 6 000r/min and 240N.m at 4 000r/min.

The engine is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. The Active and Dynamic derivatives send power to the front wheels, while the Individual and flagship Homura models feature all-wheel drive.

Mazda says suspension and handling have been refined, with dedicated damper development aimed at improving the balance between everyday comfort and driving dynamics.

The four-model CX-5 range starts at R578 350 for the Active and tops out at R749 100 for the flagship Homura.

All models come with MazdaCare, which includes a five-year/unlimited-km factory warranty, a five-year/unlimited-km service plan and five years of roadside assistance.

The range-topping Homura features premium tan leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, ambient interior lighting and a powered panoramic sunroof.

It also features a 15.5-inch infotainment display with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, driver personalisation, a Bose sound system and a digital instrument cluster. Exterior features include black 19-inch alloy wheels and bespoke roof rails.

The new CX-5 receives an enhanced suite of advanced driver assistance systems, including a 360-degree camera, blind-spot monitoring, lane-change assist, adaptive cruise control, Mazda’s i-Activsense safety technologies and tyre-pressure monitoring.

“With the arrival of the all-new Mazda CX-5, we are introducing a vehicle that perfectly embodies Mazda’s commitment to creating meaningful experiences through exceptional design, intuitive technology, advanced safety and engaging driving dynamics,” said Deolinda Da Costa, head of marketing and communications at Mazda Southern Africa.
