Man killed, two injured as tree falls on food vendors in Springs
A man in his 30s was killed and two women injured when a tree fell on them in Gold Street, Springs, next to the Ekurhuleni TVET College campus on Thursday morning.
City of Ekurhuleni disaster and emergency management services spokesperson Tikkie MacDonald said the emergency call centre received a report of the incident at 10.44am.
Emergency crews found the man trapped under the tree with no signs of life. He was declared dead at the scene.
Two women sustained moderate injuries. They were treated at the scene before being taken to a nearby hospital by Gauteng Emergency Medical Services.
“It is believed the people were vendors selling food,” MacDonald said.
The city’s parks department was called in to help with cutting and removing the tree.
MacDonald said the incident had been handed over to the police, who would open an inquest docket at Springs police station.
