Medi vows to ‘send Ntounta to slumberland’ in clash
Jason “El Rey” Medi has promised to repay Kevin “Two Guns” Lerena with a definitive victory against Douglas Ntounta on November 7.
Medi – who displays the physical traits, technical skills, and mental drive required to eventually contend for major world titles – will take on the Cape Town-based Congolese at Sandton Convention Centre.
Medi said Lerena gave him the opportunity to fight in Aquila Boxing Promotion (ABP). Lerena is the ambassador of ABP which is owned b y his wife, Geraldine Lerena. “I want to make full use of this opportunity given by Lerena. It’s been 12 months since I last fought,” he said.
“We’ve built a strong relationship from this camp and I am hopeful that Kevin will continue giving me opportunities to fight in Aquila’s tournaments.”
Trained by Christopher Morrow and Vusi Mtolo, Medi said: “This one [Ntounta] is gonna [go to] sleep.”
Medi, who has sent seven of his 12 victims to slumberland, last fought in November when he blasted Azizi Mponda in two rounds in Booysens. He was supposed to have fought against Mbiya Kanku in Golden Gloves’ Shaya Thursday tournament at Emperors Palace last month but Kanku did not show up.
Medi has everything going for him – reach and height, power and experience. He assisted Lerena with sparring for his WBC International cruiserweight title fight against Scott “Ferocious” Florrest from Scotland.
The fight – Lerena’s return in the weight division where he reigned supreme for four years as the IBO king – will headline the ABP tournament.
The match is an intriguing one as it features a highly experienced former multi-time world champion and a highly decorated amateur pedigree fighter.
A direct comparison of the two fighters reveals a classic matchup between a highly experienced, multiple-time world champion resetting his career and a heavily pedigreed former elite amateur looking for a breakthrough professional win.
Asked what he thought of Lerena against SA-born Florrest, Medi did not mince his words: “Kevin is going to demolish that guy.”
These fights and four others will be televised live on SuperSport from 7pm.
