Grade 10 pupil shot dead in front of classmates at KZN school
A 19-year-old Grade 10 learner, identified in reports as Sphelele Ngubane, was shot and killed at Ndengezi Intermediate School in KwaNdengezi, near Pinetown, KwaZulu-Natal, on Monday morning (14 September 2026).
Police say Ngubane entered the school with another person who was wearing the same school uniform. Once inside the school premises, the other person allegedly shot Ngubane several times before fleeing the scene.
Ngubane was declared dead at the scene. His family reportedly said he was shot five times from behind.
The KZN Department of Education confirmed that Ngubane was a Grade 10 learner and condemned the killing as particularly disturbing because it happened on school premises.
Police have opened a murder investigation and launched a manhunt for the suspect. The motive for the shooting has not yet been established. Ndengezi Intermediate is located in KwaNdengezi, Pinetown
