Five year old Kiara Mohan dies in a very terrifying playtime manner in
Five-year-old Kiara Mohan died tragically on Friday, 15 May 2026, after a municipal skip bin fell on her while she was playing outside at the Suryaville municipal flats in Jasmine Crescent, Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal.
She was playing hide-and-seek with friends when the heavy bin (reportedly unstable and missing wheels) toppled over and crushed her.
Her family and neighbours tried desperately to lift it off her. She was rushed to Mediclinic Newcastle and declared dead on arrival.
Newcastle police have opened an inquest into her death. The Newcastle Municipality is investigating.
Residents and her mother (Lisa Mohan) have blamed municipal negligence, saying the bins had been in poor condition for some time.
