Police Minister Firoz Cachalia says the South Africa Police Service’s (SAPS) Anti-Gang Unit has been strengthened following the killing of two members in Reiger Park, East Rand.

Constables Thapelo Tlomatsane and Sphiwe Sibeko were shot dead alongside two women on Friday night.

One person of interest, a suspected gang leader has since been taken in for questioning.

Police have also recovered two firearms belonging to the deceased officers.

Cachalia addressed the media after visiting the families on Sunday. “We visited the families, there were many people, family members, friends and community members at the houses of the two slain officers, it was very sad, the families are going through very difficult time. The two officers, two young men, 27 and 28 years old, who joined the police service about two years ago. I can say that it is very difficult as the police minister to visit the two families.”

Chachalia added, “In response to the high levels of gang violence and in response the community, we going to strengthen the anti-gang units and two of whom were slain on the seventh of August, so its very important for our people to understand what our police officers go through, I don’t think there is any other career which people have to put their lives on the line.”
