Mamelodi Sundowns and Wiliete SC could not be separated after playing to 0-0 draw in the second preliminary round first-leg of the CAF Champions League on Sunday evening.

The holders started the defence of their title after a bye in the first preliminary round and came with their tails up following an emphatic midweek win over Richards Bay FC in the Betway Premiership, as Wiliete came out to spoil the party.

With the match delayed for a period of 30 minutes due to weather and pitch conditions, Masandawana looked for a fast start in the opening five minutes through Brayan Leon, but he was met with a goal-line clearance.

Sundowns still looked better in the earlier exchanges and posed another threat with ten minutes gone via a powerful long-range free-kick by Teboho Mokoena following a foul on Tashreeq Matthews, but he was denied by goalkeeper Beny.

The home team weren’t overawed and were a threat in the wide channels and counter-attack, but Masandawana still enjoyed the better of the chances when Matthews went close with a one-on-one following a stray pass and snapped his lines.

Sundowns, meanwhile, were forced to a substitution five minutes ahead of the halftime as key midfielder Mokoena failed to continue following discomfort from a knock and was replaced by Bathusi Aubaas.

Masandawana didn’t assert authority and battled to get going at the start of the second half, as they needed a smart stop from goalkeeper Ricardo Goss to keep the host capitalising on a free-kick and profiting.

Goss continued to keep out the home team minutes into the second period when he shifted across to his near side in the attacking area to keep out a first-time shot from Mabulu.

Sundowns regained momentum after a pretty tense spell as Matthews found an opening again in the 66th minute and stepped into the area to get a shot away, but Beny was on hand to claw it out.

Masandawana still showed courage up top and were close again to finding the breakthrough in the final minutes with a snap shot from substitute Iqraam Rayners, but he sent his effort wide of the mark as the home side were able to hold on for the goalless draw.

The second-leg is scheduled to take place on Friday in Tshwane.
