The African National Congress (ANC) Caucus for Police Oversight and Community Safety in the Western Cape Legislature has called for the stabilisation of police intelligence in the province and the immediate appointment of a Provincial Head of Intelligence.

This follows three separate mass shootings in Langa, Gugulethu, and Khayelitsha on the Cape Flats this weekend that claimed the lives of 11 people.

Spokesperson, Benson Ngqentsu, says the chronic crisis of police resources, including vehicles and personnel needs to be addressed urgently as this would indicate commitment in tackling violent crime.

Ngqentsu says underdevelopment in working-class townships also needs to be addressed.

“If these factors are not addressed violent crime will persist and extend to other areas outside Cape Town as they now have extended to areas such as Stellenbosch in particular Kayamandi. Therefore, we cannot have a serious conversation about violent crime without confronting both the capacity of the police to prevent, combat and investigate crime. And also the socio-economic conditions that continue to reproduce crime in our communities,” he says.
