President Cyril Ramaphosa has authorised the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to expand its investigation into various transport tenders and contracts within KwaZulu-Natal, citing concerns over potential maladministration and irregular expenditure.

The expansion of the probe reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring accountability and transparency in the procurement of public services, particularly within the transport sector.

The investigation will now encompass a broader range of contracts, scrutinising the processes followed by provincial departments and municipal entities to ensure they align with National Treasury regulations and fair competition standards.

The SIU is empowered to recover any financial losses incurred by the state and to refer any identified criminal conduct to the National Prosecuting Authority for further action.
