President Cyril Ramaphosa says it’s up to Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa (BRICS) countries to defend and strengthen the multilateral order. He addressed the 18th BRICS summit session on inclusive global governance and strengthening multilateralism in the Indian capital, New Delhi.

Ramaphosa says the relevance of the United Nations (UN) and the durability of multilateralism are now threatened by overt violations of the United Nations Charter and the resort to war to settle differences between Member States.

President Ramaphosa says South Africa advocates for a predictable global system based on international law, with the United Nations charter at its centre. He also says the international law cannot be applied selectively; the same principles must apply to all states.

The President has reiterated the call for comprehensive UN Security Council reform for the global body to be more representative, accountable and effective.

Ramaphosa further says BRICS must be a bridge across geopolitical divides in a fragmented world and dialogue matters more than confrontation.

“It is up to BRICS to defend and strengthen that multilateral order.”
