The Political Killings Task Team says they’ve arrested a Mayor, a Municipal Manager and a Chief Financial Officer at a municipality in the Garden Route region of the Western Cape.

National Police Spokesperson, Athlenda Mathe says the municipal officials were arrested in connection with alleged corruption involving security services.

Mathe says they received reports that a businessman who was awarded the security tender was being solicited for kickbacks. “The arrests follow information received by the police regarding allegations that a businessman who had been awarded a security services contract was being solicited for kickbacks in exchange for the continuation of the contract. It is alleged that the businessman had already paid hundreds of thousands of rands out of fear that his security services contract would be terminated. All three face charges of corruption and are due in court on Monday, the 5th of October.”
