A truck is stuck in the snow on the R617 near Kingscote between Underberg and Kokstad along the southern Drakensberg in KwaZulu-Natal.
The provincial Transport Department says the route has been closed and traffic is being diverted to the R56. Meanwhile, the N3 Toll Concession company says it has started spreading brine on the road at Van Reenens Pass to prevent ice from forming. Light snowfall has been reported on the N3 between Balgowan and Nottingham Road.
Transport MEC, Soboniso Duma has called on people to stay at home today to avoid getting trapped in the snow.
The department’s spokesperson, Ndabezinhle Sibiya says, “We are requesting motorists to delay their trips and members of the public to remain indoors as prevention is better than cure. We have stated in the past, our snowfall response plan involves removing snow before it accumulates to a depth of 30 centimeters. In this regard, our hard-working operators of graders have been activated.”
