Mbokazi has enjoyed a stellar campaign in the United States, cementing his place as a defensive pillar for Chicago Fire FC while also representing Bafana Bafana on the international stage at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
His tenacious tackling, tactical intelligence and distribution from the back have earned him high praise throughout the MLS regular season.
However, despite putting up impressive statistical displays in appearances and defensive duels, his bid for the top individual honour was ultimately derailed by fitness concerns.
Former MLS star and expert analyst Bradley Wright-Phillips gave his verdict on the league’s top defenders. He highlighted Nashville SC’s Maxwell Woledzi as the favourite for that.
He did, however, single out the South African centre-back for special praise while explaining why he is likely to miss out on the main award.
“Chicago’s Mbekezeli Mbokazi is class, but he missed a lot of action due to an injury after the World Cup,” Wright-Phillips noted, per MLSsoccer.com.

While the mid-season injury layoff cost Mbokazi the necessary minutes to challenge for the outright award, earning an honourable mention underscores his immense impact and elite pedigree in American top-flight football.
