National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola has commended authorities on executing a major drug bust of more than R200 million worth of cocaine at the OR Tambo International Airport in Gauteng.

Earlier today, the consignment was discovered hidden in luggage bags which were on a flight from Sao Paolo in Brazil.

The cocaine was stored in 216 separate packages concealed in suitcases.

The multi-disciplinary task team, including the SAPS, SARS, and the Border Management Authority, found five luggage bags containing 216 blocks of cocaine weighing approximately 250 kilograms.

Masemola says the significant seizure is a testament to the effectiveness of coordinated law enforcement efforts and the commitment of frontline officers to disrupting drug trafficking networks that seek to use South Africa’s ports of entry to move illicit substances.
