A 37-year-old man accused of defrauding four insurance companies of more than R2m by claiming for items he allegedly did not own has been granted R1,000 bail.

North West Hawks spokesperson Lt-Col Tinyiko Mathebula said Boitumelo Radingwana appeared in the Ottosdal magistrate’s court on Tuesday, facing four counts of fraud.

Mathebula said Radingwana was arrested on Monday by the Hawks’ serious commercial crime investigation unit in Mmabatho following an investigation into the alleged fraud.

The allegations relate to insurance policies Radingwana allegedly took out between April and August 2021 to cover personal items, including watches.

He allegedly submitted fraudulent documents to claim compensation for losses. However, an investigation allegedly revealed that he did not own the items for which he sought payment, Mathebula said.

Radingwana was granted R1,000 bail and the case was postponed to November 24 for a regional court date.
