Maboe injury update ahead of Bafana camp

Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Lebohang Maboe’s return to Bafana Bafana is hanging in the air after an injury forced him out on Sunday.

Maboe was withdrawn at halftime with an injury discomfort just minutes after his penalty was saved.

The injury has now placed his return to Bafana in doubt following his call up by Pitso Mosimane.

“Obviously the doctors will examine him,” says Dillon Sheppard, the Kaizer Chiefs assistant coach speaking after Sunday’s game.

“Hopefully it is just a slight ankle sprain, and he will be ready for the national team,” says Sheppard.

Bafana have gone into camp ahead of the 2027 AFCON qualifiers against Guinea and Eritrea and the friendly against Egypt.

Maboe – formerly under contract at Sundowns for seven years – has been brought back into the national team by Mosimane five years since his last cap.

The 32-year-old last featured for Bafana in June 2021 which marked the start of Hugo Broos’ reign though he wasn’t on the bench that day.

There will be a further update issued from the Bafana camp on Monday afternoon relating to Maboe.
