TWO SUSPECTS ARRESTED FOLLOWING DAMAGE TO ESSENTIAL INFRASTRUCTURE WHICH LED TO AN EXCHANGE OF GUNFIRE
The SAPS Bethlehem #PublicOrderPolice Unit arrested two suspects following an exchange of gunfire with a group of armed suspects who were allegedly digging trenches to steal electrical cables at the Bethlehem Industrial Area.
On Wednesday, 16 September 2026, police were summoned to the Bethlehem Industrial Area following information about a group of armed individuals who were allegedly digging trenches to access and steal electrical cables, thereby damaging essential infrastructure.
Upon arrival, police members were met with an exchange of gunfire from the suspects. Approximately 30 people were reportedly at the scene. During the operation, one suspect was arrested, while a second suspect was arrested later.
No injuries have been reported thus far.
A case of attempted murder and damage to #EssentialInfrastructure is being investigated. The two suspects are expected to appear before the Bethlehem Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 18 September 2026, facing charges of attempted murder and damage to essential infrastructure.
The investigation is continuing, and police are working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident and identify any other suspects who may have been involved.
