Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has firmly rejected growing calls from various political factions to disband the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC), arguing that the institution remains a vital component of South Africa’s anti-corruption framework.

We completely disagree with that approach. There’s nothing wrong with IDAC. IDAC was behaving in the manner it was behaving because there was no structure playing oversight over that structure.

Malema’s stance comes amid intense parliamentary debate regarding the future of the directorate, which has faced significant scrutiny following revelations at the Madlanga Commission. While some opposition members have advocated for the total disestablishment of the body, citing concerns over the abuse of investigative powers and internal governance failures, Malema maintains that the introduction of judicial oversight is sufficient to correct previous misconduct.

The EFF leader’s position has sparked a polarized reaction among the public. Supporters of his view argue that the institution should be reformed rather than abolished, emphasizing the need for a specialized, multidisciplinary capability to tackle complex, high-level corruption. Conversely, critics argue that the directorate’s history of procedural errors and questionable judgment warrants a complete overhaul or replacement, suggesting that Malema’s defense of the entity is politically motivated.

As the parliamentary ad hoc committee continues its deliberations, the debate highlights a broader national disagreement over how South Africa should balance the need for aggressive anti-corruption enforcement with the necessity of institutional accountability and legal adherence.
