Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has firmly rejected calls for the disestablishment of the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC), sparking a heated debate among South Africans regarding the agency’s future and the motivations behind his stance.

We completely disagree with that approach. There’s nothing wrong with IDAC. IDAC was behaving in the manner it was behaving because there was no structure playing oversight over that structure.

Malema’s defense of the unit comes as an ad hoc committee of Parliament deliberates on the future of the agency, with some members, including the MK Party, arguing that the conduct of senior officials has demonstrated a potential for the abuse of power. Committee member David Skosana expressed support for the agency’s dissolution, drawing parallels to the defunct Scorpions unit.

However, Malema maintains that the introduction of judicial oversight is sufficient to address previous concerns regarding the unit’s conduct. His position has left the public divided, with some supporters praising his focus on institutional reform, while critics question his motives given the ongoing scrutiny surrounding the agency’s leadership and operations.
