Julius Malema rejects calls to scrap IDAC: South Africans divided by EFF leader’s reasoning
Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has firmly rejected growing calls from various political factions and civil society groups to scrap the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC), sparking a heated national debate.
The calls to dissolve the unit have intensified following recent performance concerns and questions regarding its independence from executive influence. However, Malema argued that dismantling the institution would be a regressive step for South Africa’s fight against systemic graft.
The EFF will not support the destruction of the very mechanisms designed to hold the powerful accountable, regardless of the current administrative shortcomings. We must fix the institution, not discard it.
Malema’s stance has left South Africans deeply divided. Supporters of his position believe that the IDAC, despite its flaws, remains a critical pillar in the prosecution of high-level commercial and financial crimes. Conversely, critics argue that the unit has failed to deliver on its mandate and that a complete overhaul or replacement is necessary to restore public trust.
As the discourse continues, experts remain split on whether the IDAC can be effectively reformed or if it is fundamentally compromised by its current structural configuration within the National Prosecuting Authority.
