Immigration police accused of abusing legal migrants

Legal migrants in South Africa are increasingly reporting instances of abuse and harassment by police officers who fail to recognize valid documentation, according to recent reports. Advocacy groups, including those led by Ian Cameron and others, have highlighted that law enforcement officials are frequently ignoring legal permits, such as the Zimbabwean Exemption Permit (ZEP), during routine checks and operations.

Bolhuis and Els said ignorance is no excuse and officials must be retrained to reliably recognise lawful immigration status.

The issue has gained prominence as police intensify operations against undocumented migrants. However, critics argue that these crackdowns are often conducted without proper training, leading to the intimidation of individuals who are in the country legally. Video evidence has surfaced showing officers dismissing the validity of official extensions and directives issued by the Department of Home Affairs.

Human rights organizations are calling for urgent intervention to ensure that police officers are adequately trained to distinguish between legal and undocumented status. They warn that the current approach is not only violating the rights of legal residents but is also fostering an environment of fear and distrust between immigrant communities and the police service.
