EFF hits back at AfriForum over Malema’s crimen injuria prosecution
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have responded to the news that their leader, Julius Malema, is set to face prosecution for crimen injuria following representations made by AfriForum’s Private Prosecution Unit.
The case stems from allegations made by Malema against an Eastern Cape school principal, whom he publicly accused of rape. AfriForum successfully convinced the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) to proceed with the prosecution after the organization argued that the accusations were false and defamatory.
The EFF maintains that this is a politically motivated attempt to silence its leadership and distract from the real issues facing the country.
In a statement, the EFF criticized AfriForum’s involvement, labeling the organization as a group that seeks to protect the interests of a minority at the expense of justice for the marginalized. The party asserted that Malema’s comments were made in the context of advocating for victims of gender-based violence.
AfriForum, however, has defended its actions, stating that it is committed to holding public figures accountable for their words and ensuring that the rule of law is applied equally to everyone, regardless of their political status.
