DA explains why it will vote against EFF motion of no confidence in Thoko Didiza

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has announced that it will vote against the Economic Freedom Fighters’ (EFF) motion of no confidence in National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza, arguing that her removal would be premature.

The DA will vote against the EFF’s motion of no confidence in National Assembly speaker Thoko Didiza, despite having previously criticised her handling of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s impeachment proceedings.

DA parliamentary leader George Michalakis stated that while the party has been critical of the Speaker’s approach to the interdict application brought by the President regarding the impeachment process, removing her at this stage is not the appropriate method to strengthen Parliament. Michalakis noted that he held a meeting with Didiza on August 11 to express these concerns directly and seek institutional improvements.

The EFF’s motion, led by Julius Malema, accused Didiza of failing to defend Parliament and acting in a biased manner by not opposing the President’s court application to interdict impeachment hearings. Despite these allegations, the DA has opted not to support the ousting of the Speaker.
