CCTV Captures Alleged Home Invader’s Shock After Spotting Security Camera During Pretoria Break-In

Pretoria, Gauteng — July 23, 2026

A suspected home intruder was allegedly caught off guard after realizing he was being recorded by a CCTV camera while inside a residential property in Pretoria.

The incident occurred during the early hours of the morning when an alleged burglar gained access to a home by climbing over the perimeter wall. Security footage reportedly shows the suspect moving cautiously through the property before suddenly looking directly at a surveillance camera.

The CCTV footage allegedly captured the moment the suspect noticed the camera, appearing visibly startled before attempting to conceal his face and flee the property.

The homeowner, who had been alerted by a motion-detection security system linked to the cameras, immediately contacted a private security company and the South African Police Service (SAPS). Responding officers reportedly arrived within minutes and searched the surrounding area, but the suspect had already escaped.

Investigators are reviewing the CCTV footage, which clearly captured the suspect’s clothing and movements throughout the attempted break-in. Police also canvassed the neighbourhood for additional surveillance footage that may help determine the direction in which the suspect fled.

No injuries were reported, and only minor property damage was allegedly sustained during the attempted burglary. Authorities believe the visible security camera and rapid alarm response may have prevented the suspect from stealing valuables from the home.

Security experts used the incident to remind homeowners of the value of modern surveillance systems, noting that visible CCTV cameras, motion sensors, and alarm systems can discourage criminal activity and provide valuable evidence during investigations.

Police have appealed to anyone with information relating to the incident to come forward as the investigation continues.
