Nomvula Ndlela, a 28-year-old woman from KwaMakhutha (also referred to as Makhutha), was fatally attacked by a pack of dogs in Woodlands, Montclair, Durban (south of Durban) around early July 2026.
She was attacked while walking on the street (reportedly heading to a garage to buy something). Residents and bystanders tried to intervene but couldn’t stop the dogs, which continued attacking, including areas like the face and neck. She sustained severe injuries and died.
Police found her on the side of the road at the corner of Atherstone Place and Norwich Crescent. An inquest docket was opened.
Her family (including her mother, Bathobile Ndlela) has spoken out, rejecting compensation offers and demanding justice and accountability. They noted prior community complaints about roaming/stray dogs in the area. Nomvula had recently moved there for a job and was the family breadwinner.
The incident has led to community meetings involving police, councillors (e.g., Ward 64 Councillor Norman Gilbert), animal welfare groups, and the Community Policing Forum, with calls for stricter enforcement of animal bylaws regarding leashing and stray dogs.
