The life and legacy of slain whistleblower, Babita Deokaran is being honoured in Mount Edgecombe, north of Durban – today with the unveiling of a memorial monument at the Shri Marriammen Temple Heritage Site.

The tribute brings together Deokaran’s family, government officials, civil society and anti-corruption advocates. This ahead of the five year death anniversary of Deokaran, who was assasinated outside her Johannesburg home in August 2021, for exposing alleged corruption within the Gauteng Health Department.

The monument is being unveiled at the Shri Marriammen Temple at Mount Edgecombe where Babita Deokaran grew up. Among those expected to attend are KZN Premier Thami Ntuli, KZN Public Works MEC Martin Meyer and Deputy Forestry, Fisheries and Environment Minister Narend Singh.

Civil society and anti-corruption voices, including the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation are also in attendance. The ceremony will remember Deokaran’s courage and her commitment to accountability, while renewing calls for stronger protection of whistleblowers.
