A devastating head-on collision between a sedan and an SUV on the R34 near Mancamane
A devastating head-on collision between a sedan and an SUV on the R34 near Mancamane early Saturday morning has left one person dead and five others injured, triggering a complex, time-critical rescue operation by emergency services.
The KwaZulu Private Ambulance Service (KZPA) Vryheid crew responded to the scene at approximately 07:20. Upon arrival, first responders were met with a scene of severe wreckage. A red sedan and an SUV had collided with massive force, leaving debris strewn across the roadway and trapping a passenger inside the crumpled remains of the sedan.
Six patients in total were evaluated at the scene. Three occupants had managed to extricate themselves from the vehicles prior to the arrival of emergency services. Medical personnel quickly established that four patients had sustained serious injuries, including multiple fractures and suspected spinal trauma.
The impact proved fatal for the driver of the sedan, who was declared deceased on arrival. A second occupant, seated in the rear of the sedan, was found trapped in the wreckage with critical, life-threatening injuries, including severe chest trauma and multiple fractures.
With municipal fire rescue services delayed en route, the KZPA specialized rescue unit immediately initiated extrication procedures. Using hydraulic rescue equipment, crews successfully created access to the rear seat of the sedan, freeing the critically injured patient within the golden hour.
All five surviving patients were stabilized on-scene using advanced life support protocols before being transported to various medical facilities within the Northern KZN precinct for specialized definitive care.
The R34 was closed entirely for approximately one hour while emergency personnel worked to clear the scene and secure the area. The South African Police Service (SAPS) and local law enforcement authorities were present on the scene and have initiated a full investigation into the cause of the collision.
