7 SOMALI NATIONALS FOUND HIDDEN UNDER RICE BAGS IN ZAMBIA
Seven Somali nationals were discovered hidden beneath bags of rice inside a vehicle intercepted by authorities in Zambia.
The group was found after Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) enforcement officers stopped and searched a Toyota Probox travelling through Kapiri Mposhi towards the Chirundu border with Zimbabwe.
During the search, officers found the seven men concealed in the rear cargo area underneath bags of rice and other goods.
The Zambian driver was detained along with the seven Somali nationals, and they were handed over to Zambia’s Department of Immigration for further investigation and immigration procedures.
Authorities suspect the group was being transported illegally through the region. While reports have suggested South Africa may have been their intended final destination, this has not been officially confirmed.
The incident has raised renewed concerns about human smuggling and the movement of undocumented migrants along Southern African transit routes
