The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has hit back at AfriForum following the announcement that the lobby group’s private prosecution unit has successfully pushed for the prosecution of EFF leader Julius Malema on charges of crimen injuria.

The EFF views this as yet another desperate attempt by AfriForum to use the legal system to harass and intimidate our leadership,

the party stated in a press release. The charges stem from comments made by Malema regarding an Eastern Cape school principal, whom he had publicly accused of rape.

AfriForum’s private prosecution unit, led by Advocate Gerrie Nel, had previously made representations to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), arguing that there was sufficient evidence to pursue the case. The NPA has since confirmed that it will proceed with the prosecution.

The EFF maintains that Malema’s comments were made in the context of public interest and advocacy for victims of gender-based violence. The party has vowed to defend its leader vigorously in court, describing the legal action as a politically motivated campaign designed to silence opposition voices.
