National police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe has described the case of a high ranking police official as sensitive.

She was speaking outside the Randburg Magistrates’ Court in Johannesburg in which the Lieutenant-General is expected to appear this morning.

The Commissions Recommendations Task Team (CRTT) arrested the police official.

The senior officer was arrested at a Sandton restaurant by the CRTT, just after 5pm on Monday.

Police have highlighted the importance of entrusting its officers with protecting women and children.

“You will all recall that the President has declared GBVF as a national disaster. So as the SAPS we have pumped all resources to ensure that we heightened and enhance our response to GBVF,” explains Mathe.

Meanwhile, the Acting National Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS), Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane, has strongly condemned the alleged conduct, particularly in the context of the country’s ongoing fight against gender-based violence and femicide.
