Ouaddou’s Pirates challenge: ‘Mofokeng is the example’

Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has pointed to Relebohile Mofokeng as an example of the ambition he wants to see from his players after the youngster’s impressive start to life in Europe.

Mofokeng left Pirates in July to join Belgian side Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, having helped the Buccaneers win the Betway Premiership title last season.

The Bafana Bafana attacker has wasted little time making his mark abroad, scoring his fourth goal for Union SG in Thursday’s 3-0 UEFA Europa League victory over Viktoria Plzen in the Czech Republic.

Ouaddou, who worked with Mofokeng at Pirates, believes the 21-year-old’s approach is the kind of mentality his current squad should follow.

“Yeah, Orlando Pirates is building stories since many, many years now, since decades and credit has to be given to the club,” Ouaddou told SuperSport TV.

“But, coming back to Relebohile Mofokeng, when I am a bit hard with my players, it’s the example that we have to follow, if we are ambitious and this boy was very ambitious.

“All what he was doing last season in our team, it was all the time forward, so I’m happy for him, I hope he’s going to continue.

“It’s very good for the club as well in Europe, it gives a very good image for the brand of Orlando Pirates in Europe.”

Mofokeng’s move came after several seasons with Pirates, where he developed into one of the club’s key attacking players before making the next step in his career.

For Ouaddou, however, Mofokeng’s European progress also serves as a reminder of the standards he wants from the players who remain at the Soweto giants.
