Grobbelaar clears up Soweto Derby venue confusion

The confusion around the venue for the next instalment of the Soweto Derby has been addressed by Stadium Management, with the two giants set to lock horns at the end of October.

According to the PSL fixture on the Premier Soccer League website, Orlando Pirates will host their biggest rivals Kaizer Chiefs at the Orlando Amstel Arena on October 31, 2026. This has led to animated debates among the fans on social media, with Orlando having a capacity of 37,000 to 40,000, while the game’s traditional home — FNB Stadium — holds over 94,000.

However, according to Stadium Management South Africa managing director Bertie Grobbelaar, nothing has been confirmed yet on where the eagerly anticipated fixture will be held. Stadium Management are set to sit down with Pirates management to iron out the finer details.

“The fixture will always say Orlando Stadium because it’s Orlando Pirates’ home game, but then there’s negotiations going on, so it’s not decided yet,” Grobbelaar told KickOff exclusively.

“So, it’s not being decided yet. But you can check, in all previous years, it always says Orlando Stadium when it’s Pirates’ game. But nothing has been confirmed yet. We hadn’t had negotiations yet, we will meet next week with the club. It’s always been like that, it’s their home fixture and their home grounds,” he added.

With negotiations still to take place, the door remains open for the derby to be moved to the larger FNB Stadium — ensuring as many supporters as possible get to witness what is always one of the biggest fixtures on the African football calendar.
