You won’t believe what happened to this Hijacker when he was captured
The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) Tactical Response Unit (TRU), in collaboration with SAPS Gauteng Highway Patrol, Johannesburg Central SAPS, and Rentrak, has successfully apprehended a 21-year-old male suspect following a high-speed pursuit in the Johannesburg CBD on Wednesday, 13 May 2026.
The operation was initiated after TRU members received intelligence about a group of suspects planning a business robbery within the Johannesburg CBD during peak rush hour. In a coordinated effort, the operational team, including the JMPD TRU, was briefed and strategically deployed.
While monitoring the area, officers spotted a white Suzuki Dzire matching the description provided. When officers attempted to intercept the vehicle using sirens and blue lights, the driver accelerated, leading to a high-speed chase. The pursuit ended at the corner of Mooi and Anderson Streets when the suspect lost control of the vehicle and collided with a silver Toyota Starlet.
Upon approaching the vehicle and conducting a search, officers discovered three (3) rounds of live ammunition. The vehicle was fitted with false registration plates. Various sets of alternative number plates were found inside the vehicle.
The suspect was questioned at the scene. He claimed that he had travelled from KZN to pick up accomplices in Hillbrow, intending to proceed to Mafikeng to commit a business robbery.
The JMPD Chief of Police, Commissioner Patrick Jaca, has commended the swift and professional conduct of the officers involved. Their vigilance prevented a violent crime from occurring in the city centre.
The suspect was detained at Johannesburg Central SAPS and faces charges of Possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle, Possession of live ammunition, Conspiracy to commit business robbery, and Reckless and negligent driving. The Suzuki Dzire has been impounded at the SAPS Aeroton vehicle pound.
