Why Chiefs moved from Royal Bafokeng to Dobsonville

After Kaizer Chiefs announced a venue change for their home fixture against Siwelele next weekend, moving it away from Royal Bafokeng Stadium, KickOff has insight on why the game was moved away from Phokeng.

Chiefs are scheduled to host the Bloemfontein side for their upcoming Betway Premiership encounter, which was originally planned for 5 September (next week Saturday) at Royal Bafokeng Stadium.

However, Amakhosi announced a venue and date change, as they moved the league clash to Dobsonville Stadium on Sunday evening 6 September.

In an exclusive interview with KickOff, Royal Bafokeng Sport Acting Managing Director, Emile Smith has revealed that the reason the game was moved away from their stadium is due to a fixture clash with Marumo Gallants, who are set to host Polokwane City on the 4th of September.

Smith reiterated that they want to maintain the high standard they have set for themselves of providing the best playing conditions and would not compromise their quality offering by staging two Betway Premiership matches within two days.

“Chiefs and us currently have a very good relationship,” Smith said.

“The reason the game was moved was due to scheduling for Marumo Gallants home match on the 4th. We’re still actively in talks with Chiefs about future opportunities.

“We believe we have one of the best football facilities in the country and want to maintain those standards after all the work we have put in,” Smith revealed.

Gallants relocated to Rustenburg ahead of the 2026/27 season and have an agreement with Royal Bafokeng to play their home matches at the newly-revamped venue, after they were based in Bloemfontein last campaign.

Amakhosi dropped points for the second time this season after they were held to a 2-2 draw by Richards Bay on Wednesday as they settled for third spot in the standings, two points behind leaders Orlando Pirates.
