Weight of Mayo’s absence at Chiefs moves to significant point

Kaizer Chiefs forward Khanyisa Mayo will be scratching his head about his missed opportunities ahead of the next Soweto Derby on Saturday.

The biggest football match on the domestic calendar will play out at FNB Stadium with Mayo yet to play this season due to injury.

He underwent a hernia operation during the off-season and though he has been back at training since September he is yet to play.

Worse for him is that the Soweto Derby is a fixture that he hasn’t featured in after missing both league matches last season while on loan from CR Belouizdad.

Saturday’s derby will play out as game number 50 since he made a scoring debut for Chiefs against Marumo Gallants last season.

He has only played in 15% of the minutes available since his arrival as he sits on 680 out of 4440.

Last season was difficult for him having only arrived in September with the season in motion.

That left him without getting a pre-season run with the club, which contributed to only being able to put in a full shift of 90 minutes just once from the 15 appearances that he totalled.

Luckily for him, Amakhosi were convinced that he was worth turning his loan into a permanent transfer from CRB, doing so by paying an estimated R9,5 million.

Mayo’s game-time opportunities this season will be in domestic competition and trimmed down as the Soweto giants have already played eight league games.
