Firefighters were attacked while responding to a bushfire in Oaklands – KZN this afternoon (Tuesday, 09/06/2026).

Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) received an urgent request for assistance from a Firefighter and immediately dispatched all available Reaction Officers to the scene. On arrival at approximately 15:36, First Responders established that Emergency Personnel had been assaulted.

According to the Firefighters, they had responded to reports of a bushfire and commenced extinguishing the blaze (picture 4). While carrying out their duties, they approached a group of individuals after noticing they had attended to a similar incident in the area yesterday (Monday) and enquired about the cause of the fire.

The group, which included females, allegedly became hostile and assaulted the Firefighters while demanding that they stop extinguishing the vegetation fire. The Emergency Personnel retreated and requested assistance. The assailants fled upon noticing additional support arriving.

Reaction Officers subsequently established that the individuals were allegedly involved in drug dealing activities and had intentionally set the vegetation alight to create a clear passage for customers accessing the area from Moodley’s Lane in Oaklands – KZN.

No injuries were reported.
