Suspect killed in shoot-out with police in Putfontein
A suspect was shot and killed during a shoot-out with police in Putfontein at about 00:10 on May 5.
According to Putfontein SAPS station commander Lieutenant Colonel Rivoningo Ngonyama, a multi-disciplinary team comprising of EMPD, Flying Squad members, Tekkie Squad, and private security companies acted on intelligence about suspects allegedly planning to commit crime in the area.
Police identified individuals matching the description and attempted to stop them, but the suspects fled.
A chase ensued, and one suspect was cornered in Mayfield.
“The suspect started shooting at the police, who retaliated and shot the suspect in the upper body,” said Ngonyama. “He was declared dead at the scene.”
Police recovered a firearm next to the body, along with 12 empty rifle cartridges and 19 spent 9mm cartridges.
No injuries to police were reported, and another suspect remains at large. Ngonyama said the recovery of the firearm is a significant step in preventing violent crime and protecting the community.
The recovered firearm will be subjected to ballistic testing to determine whether it was used in other crimes.
Police investigations are ongoing.
