Sundowns break Chippa hearts with late goal

Mamelodi Sundowns were forced to dig deep and wrestle out a 1-1 draw against Chippa United in the Betway Premiership on Saturday evening.

Masandawana came looking to extend their lead at the top of the table after seeing off Siwelele FC in midweek, while the Chilli Boys were still chasing their first win of the campaign.
The African champions were keen to get on the front-foot earlier on and were close when a cutback from the right by Kutlwano Letlhaku picked out Brayan Leon who unleashed a first-time volley, but goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali made the save.
Sundowns’ high-pressing game kept the Chilli Boys pinned in their own half, but they were given a worrying moment when goalkeeper Ronwen Williams struggled to get a ball out of his feet after looking to build-up and invited the host to a chance though nothing came of it.
The Chilli Boys still needed to hold their own to keep a promising free-kick by Fawaaz Basaiden at bay as the first stanza concluded goalless in Gqeberha.
It was a strong start to the second half for the league leaders when Leon came short to the edge of the area to play a quick one-two with Teboho Mokoena who then released a shot, but Nwabali got down to make a save.
Chippa were still shaky at the back and a misplaced pass sent Mailula in on goal, but the final effort from the forward failed to trouble Nwabali who managed to keep it out.
Masandawana were stunned inside the final ten minutes as second-half substitute Sirgio Kammies came in on the near side of the box and turned home a cutback from Khaya Mfecane into the far corner with his first touch of the contest/
Sundowns produced an intense search for the equaliser with full-time looming and they very nearly levelled matters with a pin-point header in the area by Mokoena, but Nwabali produced a fine stop and parried for a corner.
Nwabali didn’t cover himself in glory in the last second of the clash as punch a cross straight into the path of Antonio Van Wyk to volley in the equaliser from six-yards, handing Sundowns a share of the spoils on the night.
