Spot the difference, as Chiefs’ next fixture marks a painful reminder

Kaizer Chiefs go into their next clash carrying scars that will send reminders about the heartbreak they suffered after capitulating in the last 30 minutes of a season that promised glory.
The Soweto giants’ league title drought has stretched beyond a decade, and the closest they came to winning the trophy since the last time they claimed it was in 2019/20.

When league action was put on pause following the outbreak of the deadly Coronavirus in mid-March of 2020, the men in Gold and Black were sitting pretty atop the log standings with 44 points from 22 games, four points more than second-placed Mamelodi Sundowns.
Even then, once the season got back underway, with all 16 teams in a bio-bubble set-up to safeguard the health of all, Chiefs went on to stretch that lead as the chasing pack dropped points along the way.
Fast-forward to the last round of that season’s fixtures, and The Brazilians had pulled themselves to within a sniff of defending their title, though for them to catch the league title flu, Amakhosi had to do the sneezing.
All that the Soweto giants needed was three points in the bag – May 2015 relived all over again, thank you very much!
For Sundowns, who were on the same number of points as Chiefs (56) but with an inferior goal difference, it was to win and hope their rivals from Naturena dropped points.
It is now history that after Khama Billiat opened the scoring 39 minutes into the game at Bidvest Stadium, Baroka FC equalised 20 minutes later via Manuel Kambala.
The expressions on the faces of the Chiefs players told of a sense of hopelessness, the kind of body language that was never going to aid their cause at such a crucial moment of the season.

And, as the match finished 1-1, the men in Yellow and Blue had slaughtered Black Leopards 3-0 courtesy of a Lebohang Maboe hat-trick to turn the atmosphere at Dobsonville Stadium into one of revelry.
On 5 September 2026, Chiefs go into battle against Siwelele FC under the floodlights at Royal Bafokeng Stadium (but set for a change of venue), with Reeve Frosler and Bruce Bvuma the only surviving members from that season’s squad.
Editor’s Note: As per new developments, the match will now be taking place on 6 September at Dobsonville Stadium.
