While Bafana Bafana were qualifying for major competitions and rebuilding pride in South African football, Luther Singh remained on the outside, holding onto the hope that he would one day return to the national team.
He is back in the national team and he is determined to make the most of this opportunity that has been given to him by new coach Pitso Mosimane. Singh has been a key performer for AEL Limassol in Cyprus and Mosimane has been keeping an eye on his progress, which is why he has been called up for the upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Guinea and Eritrea, as well as the international friendly against Egypt.
After a five-year absence from the national team, the 29-year-old has an opportunity to remind South Africans what he is all about.
“It’s a a dream and an honour to be part of the national team, representing your country. I am grateful and happy to be back in the national team. It’s been a long time since I’ve been part of the national team, but the dream was always the same. The goal was always the same, to work hard and work smarter and change many things for me to be able to come represent my country again. I am just grateful that I got another opportunity to be here and I will grab it with both hands because the opportunity came again. We will continue to work and see after this,” he told media.
“We need to look and be honest and realistic. For the past few years, the national team has been doing very well. The players that were there represented the country very good, so we need to say this and be realistic. For me, it motivated me to keep going and to keep believing. I had the hope and belief that one day maybe I will get a chance again.”
Getting into the starting line-up will not be easy for Singh, who can play in different attacking positions. The likes of Oswin Appollis, Relebohile Mofokeng, Thapelo Maseko and Cassius Mailula are possible starters, so competition for spots in the attacking positions will be tough.
