Shitolo Secures Deal With University Of Pretoria?
Gladwin Shitolo has put pen to paper on a one-year deal with Motsepe Foundation Championship outfit University of Pretoria, according to information gathered by the Siya crew.
The 37-year-old midfielder is understood to have joined the side coached by Michael Loftman after spending time training with the Pretoria-based outfit to keep himself match-fit.
As previously reported, the former Orlando Pirates and Golden Arrows midfielder had been training with Tuks following his departure from Abafana Bes’thende, where he made seven appearances in the Betway Premiership last season.
A source confirmed to the Siya crew that Shitolo was using the setup to maintain fitness while awaiting his next professional opportunity. That trial period has now resulted in a permanent deal.
The move makes sense for both parties. Tuks secure an experienced midfielder without paying a transfer fee, while Shitolo extends his professional career despite dropping down a division.
Shitolo brings considerable top-flight experience to Loftman’s squad, having started his career at Jomo Cosmos in 2009 where he made 71 appearances over five years. He joined Pirates in 2014 but managed just 32 appearances for the Buccaneers, with loan spells at Platinum Stars and Chippa United following before he settled at Arrows permanently in 2022.
During his time at Arrows, Shitolo became a reliable squad member, featuring in 72 matches and scoring two goals for the KwaZulu-Natal outfit across three seasons.
At 37, the midfielder’s PSL experience could prove valuable in a Tuks side competing in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, where seasoned professionals often make the difference in tight promotion races.
The challenge for Shitolo will be adapting to second-tier football after spending the majority of his career in the top flight.
