SAA cools hopes of return to India despite Ramaphosa push
South African Airways (SAA) has dampened expectations regarding a potential return to the Indian market, despite recent advocacy from President Cyril Ramaphosa for the airline to expand its international footprint.
The national carrier, which has been focused on stabilizing its operations following its emergence from business rescue, indicated that any expansion plans must be grounded in commercial viability rather than political pressure.
The airline remains committed to a sustainable growth strategy that prioritizes profitability and operational efficiency over rapid network expansion.
President Ramaphosa had previously suggested that re-establishing direct links to India could bolster trade and tourism ties between the two BRICS nations. However, SAA leadership has maintained that the current economic climate and the airline’s existing fleet constraints make such a move premature.
Industry analysts have noted that while the route holds strategic value, the high operational costs and intense competition from Middle Eastern carriers make it a challenging prospect for the state-owned entity at this stage.
